Experimental bummer rock (it’s a thing) band BRUXES will be releasing a brand new EP, titled Boys Will Be Boys, this Friday, November 18 through Cardigan Records. Today, we have the privilege of streaming the five-track effort in its entirety, and you can enjoy it below.

Genre-wise, BRUXES’ EP covers a lot of ground in just 21 minutes—several areas of rock are explored across its five offerings. With elements of pop, indie, and even a little bit of emo, the band uses strong melodies, occasional electronics, tinges of Gothic darkness, and lots of mood to set the tone with Rachel Hirsh’s impressive vocals leading the way. As far as the driving forces that led to the album’s creation and the ideas generally found within the lyrics, Hirsh says:

“‘Boys Will Be Boys’ is a collection of songs about trying to navigate life with the circumstances you have been given. My circumstance is that I am a young woman with a mental disorder, and that affects every facet of my life, and I want to talk about that openly.”

Boys Will Be Boys can be pre-ordered digitally through iTunes or Cardigan Records with physical CDs available through Cardigan as well.

To celebrate the release of the EP, BRUXES will play at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC this Friday night, with Body Games, Teardrop Canyon, and Youth League also performing. Doors open at 8:00 and it’s only $7 so if you’re in the area, go hang out and support good local music. Tickets and info for the event can be found here.
