If anyone is having a bigger year than Halsey it’s The Chainsmokers, so it only makes sense that the two biggest names in pop music would join forces to deliver a song that will no doubt be in heavy rotation for months to come.
I’m not sure the world is ready for “Closer,” which has been teased on social media for weeks at this point, but the song finally arrived on streaming platforms and digital retailers early this morning. The track finds The Chainsmokers and Halsey taking turns sharing perspectives on a fictional reunion between two former lovers who haven’t spoken or seen one another in several years. The pair meet in a hotel bar, but soon things get physical, and before you know it the couple in the song is getting hot and heavy in the back of a Rover the girl cannot afford. Take a listen now:
I probably should have warned you before embedding the video that the song was likely to induce an unstoppable desire to dance wherever you are, but hopefully you didn’t break anything that cannot be replaced. If you did, or if you somehow embarrassed yourself by showcasing your club night moves to the people in line behind you at Starbucks, just know they will all understand when “Closer” reaches their ears. This song is a crazy-good example of the place where alternative pop and EDM collide, and it has a hook that is immediately stuck in your head. If either Halsey or Chainsmokers had not spent the last year skyrocketing to the top of trending charts everywhere this would be the song to put both over the top. Who knows? It still might.
If you want more from these artists, you’re in luck. Halsey is currently touring the US, and The Chainsmokers are almost always on tour. Tickets for both acts are in high demand, however, so the sooner you can claim your seats (and by seats I mean a place to dance within the venue), the better.
